Yellowknife (pop. 21,183) is the capital of the Northwest Territories. Located on a bay on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife is a major transportation, government and business centre. The city got its start as a gold mining town, then became the centre for servicing Canada’s diamond mines.
