If you look closely, you might notice this photograph captures three major forms of transportation in a part of the country where even dirt roads are a luxury. Admittedly, dogs have lost their traditional role to snowmobiles, but dog teams still hold a big place in northern imagery and mushing is a popular sport. Travel by air and water, meanwhile, is a necessity in many parts of the territories. That’s a big part of the North’s allure. It’s remote, thinly populated and different. Everyday tasks can present novel challenges for those who aren’t used to them. We’re talking about the basics, like getting around. Sure, you can use a car in many communities. But if you really want to know this place, we suggest leaving it at home.
