Kugaaruk (pop. 933)  is located in a pretty, but rocky, and often ice-bound bay on the east side of the Boothia Peninsula. Numerous archeological sites dot the landscape. Inuit led a largely nomadic life in the area until a DEW Line site was established here in the 1950s. Today, there is mineral exploration in the surrounding area.
