Yellowknife, as a town, doesn’t go back very far. So while its Beer Barge bash, held every June, is a reenactment of the historic celebrations that accompanied the arrival of the first barge of the year, it still gives you the chance to mingle with direct descendants of some of the city’s founders and hear first-hand tales of Yellowknife’s raucous early days. In the past, the barge was stocked with supplies from the south and, most importantly, beer. This year, the kegs might be filled by local suds-smiths, NWT Brewing. – HM
