Cool Arctic apps

The iPhone apparently has an app for everything. Since it's now in some parts of the North, we found a few Arctic-themed apps to put that to the test.

The iPhone apparently has an app for everything. Since it’s now in the North, we went looking and found a few apps to put that to the test. Here's what we found.

Ice Road Truckers
$2.99 on iTunes

If you’ve dreamt of ice road truckin’ this is a painfully accurate simulation – right down to the photo-perfect ice, the cash you must earn to keep driving to places like Tuktoyaktuk, and the scary jackknifes. All that’s missing are truck stop chicken wings and Alex Debogorski’s laugh. Ten-four good buddy!

Like: Northern scenery
Dislike: Urge to install a CB in our car
Useful for: Arctic alpha-male wannabes

VanAqua: Arctic Questions
Free on iTunes

An art-installation-meets-iPhone-meets-the-Arctic, VanAqua is for the Northern do-gooder. Download it and you’ll see, in real-time, what visitors to the Arctic exhibit at the Vancouver Aquarium type in about the melting polar ice cap. Sounds great in theory, but in practice, there are few pieces of info and lots of pointless questions. Example: “Why are belugas so lumpy?”

Like: Concept
Dislike: Questions without real answers
Useful for: Fashionable do-gooders

Wind Chill Calculator
Free on iTunes

Dead simple: Punch in the outside temperature and wind-speed, and voila – you now know the windchill.

Like: Simplicity
Dislike: Windchill
Useful for: Actual Northerners

Arctic Shuffle 2
$.99 on iTunes

Mini-golf, curling and other activities . . . in the “Arctic.” One problem: the main characters are penguins. Um, can someone tell the guy who made this app . . . you know what, never mind.

Like: Penguins
Dislike: Belief they live in the Arctic
Useful for: Promoting ignorance

Pet Lover’s Seal News Reader
$.99 on iTunes

Never miss another story about seals again. Of course, if you’re in the North and you hunt them for food, you likely don’t like what the news media says.

Like: Seal-iness
Dislike: Lame-oh graphics
Useful for: Paul Watson

Quick Hunting Calls & Sounds
$1.99 on iTunes

Plug it into an amplifier and let your iPhone lure dinner. Several Northern animals included, such as a moose call, an elk bugle and coyote pack howls.

Like: Hunting with a phone
Dislike: Skinning moose with a phone
Useful for: Arctic hipsters
